About the Clinic

John Frank, MD is a hair restoration practice in Gahanna, Ohio, with locations noted in Columbus and New York City. It performs Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT), in which a strip of hair-bearing scalp is removed from the back and sides, the wound is closed, and individual grafts are dissected from the strip under microscopes before placement into fine slits made across the mapped areas of hair loss; the average case size is 2300 grafts and a procedure takes several hours. It also performs Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), in which grafts are removed one at a time with a specialized harvesting instrument, leaving no donor scar, and implanted in the same way. Both procedures use local anesthesia, with mild oral sedation for FUE, and are carried out onsite; patients care for the grafts for the first 48 hours and full results may take 12 months or longer. Additional techniques include hairline lowering, primarily for women, and alopecia reduction surgery. Consultations precede treatment, and costs vary from person to person.

Procedures Offered

FUE
FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) is a minimally invasive hair transplant technique where individual hair follicles are extracted one by one from the donor area using a small circular punch tool. The harvested follicles are then carefully implanted into the balding or thinning areas of the scalp. This method leaves tiny, nearly invisible scars rather than a linear scar, resulting in faster healing and the ability to wear shorter hairstyles. Because of this, FUE is the most popular hair transplant technique today.
FUT
FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation), also known as the "strip method," involves surgically removing a narrow strip of scalp from the donor area, typically the back of the head. The strip is then carefully dissected under a microscope to separate individual hair follicles, which are implanted into the recipient areas. While this technique leaves a linear scar that requires longer hair to conceal, it allows surgeons to harvest a large number of high-quality grafts in a single session, making it cost-effective for patients needing extensive coverage.
